Deadly Rocks

There are many theories on how the dinosaurs became extinct; one such theory involves an asteroid crashing onto Earth’s surface. “A large body, likely an asteroid from the belt between Mars and Jupiter was set into motion by a passing comet. This asteroid struck the planet on the Yucatan Peninsula in modern day Mexico sending millions of tons of dirt and water into the air,” (helium.com). “Upon striking, the comet would have sent dust and steam into the atmosphere and caused huge forest fires, tidal waves, severe storms, and eliminated all sunlight. It would be six months before sunlight would reach the ground after such a blow. The dinosaurs, even in their prime, stood no chance without sunlight and plant life,” (library.thinkquest.org).

There is chemical evidence supporting this theory. “Tektites are quartz grains which are vaporized under intense heat and pressure, and cool into glass beads with no crystalline structure. Tektites were probably formed during a meteorite or comet collision,” (enchantedlearning.com). “When quartz is put under extremely high pressure, it can cleave in parallel planes. Shocked quartz is found at nuclear bomb sites and known meteorite impact areas,” (enchantedlearning.com) “Stishovite (Silicon Dioxide) is another form of quartz created under conditions of high heat and pressure. It is used as an indicator of meteor impact,” (enchantedlearning.com).

There are other theories that suggest possible ways the dinosaurs became extinct. The dinosaurs could have been killed by various volcano eruption, the eruptions would have sent huge clouds of dust, sulfuric acid, and poisonous gases into the air blocking the sunlight and changing the climate. Also the grounds would have been covered by molten lava. Climate change is another possibility, the temperature could have dropped, and since most of the plants at the time were tropical plants they would have died and messed up the food chain. Disease is the last theory; the dinosaurs could have caught a contagious deadly disease that killed them off.

  1. This is an interesting topic that could be concluded that the dinosaurs were just not evolved enough to exist on the earth. This could also be a controversy that is going on today about scientists being able to regenerate actual dinosaur like creatures but if they were destroyed millions of years ago is it actually right to bring them back?

  2. This topic interests me greatly as well because this is one of the few myths I have seen that cannot be fully proven by science or other means. However, I have a question for matt. Since as you say "the dinosaurs were just not evolved enough to exist on the earth" Are we, humans, evolved enough to live on earth? However, matt, I do believe the regeneration of dinosaurs would be dangerous to humans because of their immense strength and hostile nature. I do not believe it would be right to try to bring dinosaurs back from the dead.

  3. This has been a myth that has been asked for such a long time and is even asked today and not entirely known. There are multiple reasons to why the dinosaurs eventually became exinct like the ones you mentioned yet there are still other reasons to why they became extinct. The question will probably not be proven for much longer unfortunately.

  4. I think that the main reason why dinosaurs became extinct was because of the sun being blocked out (weither it be from volcanos or a meteor strick). I wouldn't say that the dinosaurs weren't evolved enough, they were EXTREMELY evolved and could do things that no other animal (even humans) can do. I just think that without the sun there can be no life. Even with humans, without the right resources many people would die here too. We would have to grow our own plants and raise our own animals. Inside. It would be very difficult to survive for humans. Humans are probably the most adaptable animal in the history of the earth but to say we would have a hard time surviving it must be REALLY hard for others. Great job Kevin!

  5. THis is very interesting! I've always wondered if it truly was a meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs. I especially like topics like these because it is extremely difficult to actually prove this, and it leaves room for personal opinion. Great job on research, it was a really good topic. Great job!

  6. This is an interesting topic. I never thought about how many different things could have killed off the dinosaurs. You had alot of good information in your post, and quite a few sources that you referenced.
